Meteora, Greece – June 2014

Meteora is famous for it’s monasteries, perched high upon the tops of sandstone rock pillars. The monks, from the 12 century to the present, lived lives of austerity, separate from the world, and often supplies and monks had to be hoisted up in baskets from below. Of the original more than 20, only six are still inhabited today (four by monks, two by nuns), but today they are also a site for tourists to visit.
